Friends of the New River Walk

Friends of the New River WalkThe New River was built in the early 17th Century as a canal to convey drinking water from a spring in Hertfordshire to a reservoir in Myddleton Square, behind Sadler's Wells.  The canal is now redundant and much of it has been filled in.  Canonbury is fortunate in having a long section of the original waterway and this provides a very pleasant area for walking and a pleasant outlook for many houses.  A flow of water in the River is maintained by pumping water upstream.  This is necessary to control the growth of water weed.  The maintenance and cleaning of the waterway is undertaken by volunteers known as the Friends of the New River Walk.  The Society has financially supported and encouraged the work of the friends.  Those wishing to get involved and become a Friend are invited to contact the Secretary Mr John Tasker, 3 Hope Close, Wallace Rd, N1 2YS

The Rose Bowl Youth Club

The Rose Bowl Youth ClubThe New River Green Estate (formerly the Marquess estate) lies within the boundaries of Canonbury.  The Society gives financial support and encouragement to the work of the Rose Bowl Youth Club, through the Friends of the Rose Bowl. At the Rose Bowl we tackle issues of social exclusion of young people through a variety of innovative, targeted and effective programmes and through play, education and developing a sense of personal worth and belief. We believe that every young person deserves a chance and that with the right support that they can direct their energies into positive activities that benefit themselves, their family and their community.
